From Canton to the Super Bowl

The NFL began in 1920 in Canton, Ohio, as the American Professional Football Association. This quiz follows its history through the questions fans love: the 1972 Dolphins' perfect season, the Immaculate Reception, "The Catch," the Buffalo Bills' four straight Super Bowl losses and Tom Brady's seven rings.

Records that hold

Career records like Emmitt Smith's rushing yards and Jerry Rice's receiving yards have stood for decades, so they make reliable trivia. We leave out the current season's leaders and last year's champion, because those answers go out of date within months.

Rules questions for everyone

Not everyone at a party follows football closely. Questions on how many points a field goal or a safety is worth, how long the field is and how long a quarter lasts give every player a chance, and they're useful to know when you're watching.

Where a question names a record holder, the explanation gives the number, so a host can turn it into a closest-guess tiebreaker: how many career receiving yards did Jerry Rice finish with? (22,895.)

A Super Bowl party round

Read five questions during each quarter break and the rest at halftime. The Lombardi Trophy and Mr. Irrelevant questions are crowd-pleasers. For basketball, try the NBA quiz; for every other sport, the sports trivia set.
