Why clicking beats reading a list

Reading "Montana borders Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota and South Dakota" is easy to forget. Finding Montana on a blank map, missing it twice and seeing where it really sits is not. Each quiz gives you three tries per place, then shows the answer and moves on, and the end-of-round list tells you exactly which places to practice next.

Where the maps come from

US borders come from the Census Bureau and world borders from Natural Earth, both public domain. Every country name and capital is checked against two independent datasets before the site is built. Read how we make our maps, including how we handle disputed borders and capitals.

Map quiz questions

Are these map quizzes free?

Yes. Every map game, flag quiz and capitals quiz is free, needs no account and runs in your browser. Nothing you click is sent to a server.

Which map quiz should I start with?

If you live in the US, start with the US states map quiz and turn on 'Show names' for the first round. For the world, start with one continent, such as Europe or South America, before trying all 195 countries.

Do the map quizzes work on a phone?

Yes. Use the Zoom button to enlarge the map for small states and island countries; every quiz also has a list mode for capitals, flags and shapes.
